Special Education Programs
Special education teachers provide assistance in academic and social areas for students with special needs. Special education needs are met using inclusion rooms, where a special education teacher is in the classroom with the regular teacher during core class instruction time, offering increased teacher support for the classroom. Students may also meet with special education teachers for one-on-one instruction.
Marlette Community Schools utilizes the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process for literacy intervention for grades Kindergarten through 6th grade, in the area of Basic Reading.
For determination of a Severe Learning Disability (SLD), a Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses process is used for students in kindergarten through 12th grade for the skill area of Basic Reading. This process is also used across all other areas of SLD, kindergarten through 12th grade, which includes: Oral Expression, Listening Comprehension, Written Expression, Reading Comprehension, Reading Fluency, Math Calculation, and Math Problem Solving.
Multi-Tiered System of Supports
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a process which includes the provision of systematic, researched-based instruction and interventions to struggling learners. The interventions are matched to student needs and the monitoring of progress is continuous. MTSS is designed as an early intervention to prevent long-term academic failure. It is considered a general education service but can also be implemented in special education settings.
The following is a list of the key features of an MTSS process:
•MTSS is primarily a general education initiative designed to address the needs of struggling learners early in their educational experience.
•MTSS is based on a problem-solving model that uses data to inform decision-making.
•MTSS interventions are systematically applied and derived from research-based practices.
•MTSS is highly dependent on progress monitoring and data collection.
•MTSS intervention plans are designed, implemented, and monitored by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals.
Speech
Marlette's certified speech therapist helps students, with speech difficulties, improve their ability to communicate orally. A personalized instruction plan is created according to the student's needs. Many students eventually move out of the program as they develop correct speech patterns.
Social Work
Marlette's school social work staff, as well as private contracted counselors, work with students to resolve individual problems that interfere with learning. School social workers play an integral role in all special programs.
3-Tier Remediation
The 3-Tier Remediation Process is offers remediation in the areas of math and reading, allowing students to improve their skills in these areas.
Title One Program
The Title SeparatorOne Program services elementary and middle school students by offering support in the areas of math and reading.
